The molecule with CAS number 6790-58-5 is one of the most important raw material in the palette of a modern perfumer. Every serious company producing raw materials has its own variant. Firmenich has Ambrox, Symrise – Ambrioxide, Givaudan – Ambrifix, and KAO – Ambroxan. And it is this last name that has entered the common language and is used even by people who are not perfumers.
Theoretically, all the above substances are the same molecule, but each of them is slightly different, which means that every perfumer usually has his favorite ‘ambroxan’ 😉
