Geosmin is a molecule with a photorealistic smell of fresh, moist soil. It is produced by various blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) and filamentous bacteria in the class Actinomyces, and also some other prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The human nose is extremely sensitive to it. Its odor detection threshold is extremely low, ranging from 0.006 to 0.01 micrograms per liter in water. This means that we would sense one drop being poured into an Olympic pool.
In addition to its obvious use in wood and patchouli accords, Geosmin can be used in virtually any type of composition, adding depth and naturalness to it.
